Thimphu is the most modern city in Bhutan with an abundance of restaurants, internet cafes, nightclubs and shopping centres. However, it still retains its’ cultural identity and values amidst the signs of modernization. Thimphu is one of the few towns in Bhutan that have been equipped with ATM banking facilities and is a good place to stock up on some currency.

This lovely fortress (Dzong) and monastery is majestic in appearance and architecture. It boasts of a couple of huge courtyards amidst class rooms and staying quarters for the lama students who inhabit this amazing property. At the far end of the property to the left is a lovely temple with a beautiful statue of the calm Buddha which soothes and bless all who visit. Adjacent is a lovely viewing gallery from where you can see the entire Paro city with the river flowing through. On the right is a huge prayer hall with lovely painting of the stories of Buddha and a quiet prayer hall which also has statues for prayer. Not all get to visit this hall specially if class is in attendance. Once you step out of the Dzong do take a walk around the gardens of the property (clockwise if you wish). You will be witness to some of the best view of Paro city, the watch tower and even a heavily laden orange tree - all ideal spots for photos. You can then head down to the cantilever bridge across the river from where you may choose to exit this meorable attraction. Definitely worth a visit and an hour well spent!
